SCHOOL PROFILE

General:

Nepal, the land of the legendary Yeti, the birth place of Lord Buddha and home to the highest mountain of the world – Mt. Everest, is unfortunately one of the least developed countries in the world. Its GDP per capita is only US$ 377 when the average GNI per capita of South Asian nations stands at $3,343.  It also has the lowest literacy rate (65.5% ) in South Asia. Nepal was ranked 54th worst of 81 countries (those with GHI>5.0) on the Global Hunger Index in 2011.

Budhanilkantha School (CEEB Code: 689070), located in the capital city, Kathmandu, is the government designated National School of Nepal. It is a fully residential English medium school established in December 1972 with the joint cooperation of the Government of Nepal and the Government of the United Kingdom (UK). In the first two decades of its operation, the school was headed by a succession of British Headmasters who did an excellent job of establishing and shaping the school into a “Center of Excellence”. The school was handed over to the Nepalese management in 1994 and since then it has continued to maintain the same high standards in all fronts.  At present, the number of faculty is 75 and the support staff is 155 with student faculty ratio of almost 13:1.

The School managed under the Public Trust, the main Trustee being the Ministry of Education. The Board of Trustees and the School Management Committee (SMC) are chaired by the Education Secretary and the Joint Secretary respectively. Society of Ex Budhanilkantha Students (SEBS), the alumni association, and Friends of Budhanilkantha School (FOBS) are the two organizations that keenly take interest in the welfare of the school.

Currently there are 1027 students of which 37.1%) are girls. Students are selected from a wide range of socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds through a very highly competitive Entrance Test. About one-third of the total students are on scholarship sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Nepal. The scholarship is provided to the meritorious and the needy ones from the weak social, economic and geographical backgrounds and from all the seventy-five districts of Nepal. The main entry of the students takes place in grade 5 and these students go on to take the School Leaving Certificate Examinations (SLC) after completing grade 10. After that, students from the school together with the selective students from other schools are selected to do either the GCE A-Level program of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), UK or the Grade 11 & 12 (science program) of the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB), Nepal.

Initially the school was set up as a boarding school for boys only. In 1991, with the addition of a girls’ hostel – Hiunchuli House, built with the help of ODA, UK, the school was made co-educational. At present there are five houses for girls and eight for boys. The Post SLC Students reside in four different Houses (Byasrishi and Gaurishankar for boys, and Choyu and Ratnachuli for girls) that are under the charge of Heads of House. In the year 2015, 94 students out of 94 passed the A’ Level Examinations and 32 out of 32 passed the HSEB Examinations. The school has been demonstrating that it is not only able to achieve excellent results in the SLC and HSEB Examinations, but also achieve results significantly above international averages in the Cambridge International A’ Levels of the University of Cambridge, UK. The school has, therefore, been awarded the prestigious annual Birendra Vidya Award several times by the Ministry of Education (a national honor for academic excellence) and in effect a public recognition that Budhanilkantha is one of the best schools in the country. The brilliant performance of our students in the SLC examination, many of our teachers’ getting recognized as best teachers in their subjects, a large number of our graduates’ getting placements in so many top-ranking colleges and universities especially in the US, and more importantly, Budhanilkantha School’s getting awarded as the Best Community School of 2014 are evident of our outstanding achievements.

Courses of Study at Budhanilkantha School:

1.   Budhanilkantha School follows the National Curriculum of Nepal from Grade 5 to Grade 10. At the end of grade 10 the students sit for their School Leaving Certificate (SLC) Examination, which is conducted nationwide by the Ministry of Education, Office of the Controller of Examination, Nepal. The subjects offered in the SLC are:

Nepali, English, Comp Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health Population & Environment Education, Additional Mathematics or Geography or Economics and Computer Science or Accounts & Office Management.

2.  After the SLC, the students can follow either of the two courses:

Grades 11 & 12 (Science) syllabus of HSEB Nepal, which is a two- year course. In grade 11 the

subjects offered are: Compulsory English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Computer Science and in grade 12 they are Compulsory Nepali, compulsory English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics. HSEB of Nepal administers the final examinations (external evaluation) annually in May/June. To pass HEEB Exams students used to pass in 5 subjects each in Grade 11 and Grade 12.

The Cambridge GCE A Level Program is also of two years.  English Language (AS Level) and Mathematics are compulsory for all students and in addition, each student takes one from the following subject combinations:

i.      Physics, Chemistry & Biology                                      ii.  Physics, Chemistry & Economics

iii.    Physics, Chemistry & Further Mathematics             iv   Economics, Business Studies & Accounts

Apart from these officially offered combinations of subjects, students are free to appear privately in any one or more extra subjects in their own initiative. To pass the CIE A Level students need to pass in 3 A Level subjects.

3. Budhanilkantha School operates on ‘Semester’ system.  In the first year of A Level (Grade A1) and (Grade 11 (HSEB), students sit for two school examinations: Mid–Year (November/December) and the Annual Examinations (March/April). In the second year of A Level (Grade A2) and Grade 12, they sit for a semester examination (September), a mid-year examination (January) and a trial exam (March). They then take up their final examinations conducted by the Cambridge University (CIE) of UK (for A’ Level), and by the HSEB (Higher Secondary Education Board) Nepal (for Grade 12) in May/June, and the results are published in August of the same year.

Leadership, Responsibilities and Co-Curricular Program:

Budhanilkantha School aims to provide all-round education to its students.  It has been successful in imparting multi-dimensional skills and leadership qualities in them through a wide range of sporting and numerous co-curricular activities such as drama and debating, community services, scouts, sports and so on. Students are actively involved in organizing and participating in various activities in and outside the school. Students also hold various leadership positions in the areas defined below:

Rank of A Level students

  • The internal rank is determined by the total aggregate marks scored in officially offered 5 subjects by students in all the school examinations of A1 & A2 and Grades 11 &12 subjects.
  • The rank of an A Level student on graduation is based on the grades secured by him/her in the Cambridge GCE final examinations in five subjects officially offered to students by the school.
  • The grades of extra subjects are not considered in the ranking, and the ranking is unweighted.
  • If the students are applying for colleges after they receive the final A – Level (two-year course) Cambridge result or HSEB Grade 12 result, their final rank will appear in the School Report, Mid Year Report and Final Report forms.
  • The student is generally unranked if he/she is absent in one component or subject in any of the examinations.
